My Country ’tis of Thee

Today, something epic occurred. After months of frustration, I was granted 15 year permanent residency in India!

Acutally, it gets better than that: I am now, according to the Indian Government, A Person of Indian Origin.

Odd that I can't read the script of my country of "origin"

Oh go ahead and laugh. Varun and I will probably be joking about that title for years. Unlike permanent residency in Canada and the US, I didn’t need to have an interview, police check or months of processing. Also, instead of calling it permanent residency, they have bestowed upon me the title of a Person of Indian Origin. (The nice man at the Consulate General of India looked at me dubiously as he handed me my PIO card.)

This entitles me to:

-15 years of living/working/traveling to India without a visa
-the right to own non-agricultural land
-higher likelihood/faster processing when applying to adopt a child from India
-improved Bhangra, Hindi and cooking skills (I hope)

[Speaking of traveling, check out Oh Happy Day for a chance to win a trip for two to Paris!]
